At its core, life insurance pays a sum to your chosen beneficiaries when you pass away, helping cover expenses such as everyday living costs, mortgage payments or future education.

There are different types of life insurance to fit various needs:

Term life insurance offers coverage for a set period, making it ideal for temporary obligations like raising children or paying off a mortgage.

Whole life insurance provides lifelong protection and builds cash value over time, which can serve as a savings component in addition to coverage.

Universal life insurance allows flexibility in premiums and death benefits while also accumulating cash value, adapting as your financial situation changes.

Life insurance isn’t just for families with children. Individuals with significant financial responsibilities, business owners or anyone who wants to leave a legacy can benefit. Choosing the right coverage can protect loved ones, ensure continuity in your absence and provide peace of mind that your family’s future is secure.

At Integrity Insurance & Bonding, we help you explore life insurance options that align with your unique needs and goals.

Our aim is to make understanding coverage simple, so you can make informed decisions confidently.

Build lasting businesses when you focus on improving quality, invest in training and foster meaningful relationships.

Uncertainty isn’t new in the roofing industry – interest rates fluctuate, homeowner spending tightens and project timelines shift. Even as customers become cautious and competitors focus on cutting costs, periods of uncertainty signal opportunity for the contractors who stay committed to growth. In a live Coffee Conversations during the Western Roofing Expo (WRE), sponsored by General Coatings Manufacturing Corp and EVERROOF, the message was clear: tough times can sharpen your business if you stay focused on quality, training and relationships.

Stay true to quality

Economic uncertainty pushes many property owners to chase the lowest bid, but contractors know that short-term savings often lead to long-term failures. “People start buying on price and they’re sacrificing that quality for the price,” emphasized Stan Robinson of Pacific West Roofing and president of Western States Roofing Contractors Association (WSRCA). “It just creates a wave of more work later because something’s going to fail because of quality of workmanship.” Stan believes it’s an opening for strong contractors to differentiate themselves. When competitors cut corners, your consistency becomes your best marketing strategy.

Invest in your team and technology

Rather than waiting out the market, Seth Pietsch of Integrity Insurance and Bonding sees slower months a chance to recalibrate and build for the future. “Right now, with it being a little slower than normal, it’s a really good time for us to reassess how we’re running our processes and procedures,” he explained. “We’re investing in new technology, making things easier on our staff and giving them the education and training they need. Training they may not have had time for when everyone was running full speed.”

Will Lorenz, president of General Coatings, shared a similar approach from a manufacturer’s perspective. For General Coatings, staying close to customers has been key to weathering market changes. He shared, “We focus on quality and relationships. We’re spending a lot of time face-to-face out in the field with people, walking them through how our systems should be installed properly. We even doubled our tech service force this year because our reputation really comes down to how well the contractor had done the work.”

Being proactive with technical support and training not only improves job performance but builds trust that lasts far beyond the scope of a single project.

Building resilience together

For Elise Blackman, marketing manager for Polycoat Products, the signs of recovery are already taking shape. “Even from my perspective as a first-time homebuyer, the first question you ask when viewing a home is, ‘How’s the roof?’ With interest rates hopefully starting to decline, people will be hungry to buy again, and that just opens more opportunity for roof replacements and upgrades.” Her optimism highlights an important takeaway: preparation now will position you to capitalize when demand rebounds.

Uncertainty may always be part of the business, but how the industry responds defines its future. Listen to the full webinar to see how these leaders are building a more stable future through craftsmanship, education and connection.

Roofing contractors planning to close their business must secure Discontinued Operations Coverage to protect against future claims and compliance with state laws.

If you decide to close up shop due to retirement, a career change or any other reason, it is important to think about any responsibilities you leave behind with that could become ongoing issues that are tied to your previous projects. Our team at Integrity Insurance & Bonding Inc has the solution for you to ensure your peace of mind: Discontinued Operations Coverage.

Discontinued Operations Coverage ensures that you are protected against claims that may arise from projects completed while your business was active. Roofing, like many other trades, involves significant risk due to the nature of the work and the long-term performance expectations. Even years after closing your business, you could be held liable for issues such as leaks, or other defects related to your previous projects.

Without this coverage, you might face unexpected legal and financial burdens, which can be particularly stressful when you’re no longer generating income from your business. Discontinued Operations Coverage provides a safety net, offering peace of mind by ensuring that any potential claims can be handled without personal financial strain.

Moreover, it’s important to remain compliant with state laws. Many states require an active contractor’s license to warrant past work. This coverage not only keeps you in line with these regulations but also reinforces your professional reputation, showing that you stand by the quality of your work even after closing your business.

This is vital coverage for any roofing contractor planning to shut down their business. It shields you from future claims, provides peace of mind, and helps you stay compliant with state requirements. As you plan your next steps, make sure to secure this coverage to protect your legacy and financial well-being.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

450 women in roofing hit it out of the park at NWIR Day!

Editor's note: The following is the transcript of a conversation the Coffee Shop crew had after NWIR Day.

Karen Edwards: So National Women in Roofing Day was on Sunday, and they were about 450 women there. It was a packed house.

Lauren White: And there were so many educational sessions - 40 and summer in Spanish, there were some hands on demos for both steep slope and low slope and power tools as well.

Karen Edwards: And there were lots of sessions on leadership that were very well attended. And I think one of the most popular ones was one you went to.

Lauren White: Yes. Head Trash. Yeah, there were a couple of times where the room that the session was slotted to be in got so full because so many people were interested in the topic that we ended up going back to the main room for the keynote and everything was happening. Yeah, head trash is a book by Renie Cavallari. Just about framing your mindset and being in, you know, making better decisions and being happier and having more clear focus when you're in a good headspace versus a bad headspace and how that can spiral and affect your delivery. To your team if there's a problem and productivity then because when negative comment or action can, you know, ripple throughout the rest of the company. So that was really interesting, and I think we're actually ever discussing prob gonna take some of those discussion points and bring them to the rest of the group.

Karen Edwards: That's gonna be exciting. And then one of the last sessions was moderated by our own Heidi Ellsworth. And it was about earning professional certifications. And we heard from Amy Peevy with SOCOTEC Building Envelope, who is the president of IIBEC. Shari Carlozzi with FiberTite Roof Systems, Lee Ann Slattery with ATAS International and Sherri Miles with Miles Roofing, who all have impressive certifications under their belt. So they talked about what it takes and how to talk to your employer about potentially covering the costs of those certifications. And they also talked about the difference that it's made in their career. And it's given them an advantage because it is hard to be taken seriously sometimes. But once you hold those certifications, then anybody you're talking to knows that you really do understand it and you know what you're talking about?

Lauren White: Yeah, definitely. That was a really interesting one and just talking about financing and how how to go about studying and what it means for you personally for your career in addition to how it can help the company that you work with differentiate themselves from competition out there, too.

Karen Edwards: Yeah, and then our keynote speaker for NWIR Day was Dr. Kimberly Harden, founder and CEO of Harden Consulting Group. And she's a consultant she used to be a communications professor. And she talked about allies, advocates and accomplices and how how we can continue to support one another, you know, being women in roofing and what that means and kind of the different levels of support being an ally versus an advocate versus an accomplice. And yeah, she was she was great.

Lauren White: She had very sparkly tennis shoes.

Karen Edwards: She did. Yeah. She had a bright yellow suit, golden, sparkly tennis shoes on
and talking about showing up as our authentic selves, which she definitely did. Yes.

And then, you know, the, the award, the awards, wrapped up the day with the Rising Star Award, and that was given to Amanda Veinott, who started her own roofing company just about a year ago and has just seen tremendous growth and gives back to the community and it was really great to see her win that award and she said it was at this event last year that she talked to several women about starting her own business, and she met other women owned businesses. And that gave her the confidence that she could do it. And she did. And then our WORLD Award winner went to Devri Pieratt. And she's been in roofing for 30 years since the 90s. And she currently works for Integrity Insurance & Bonding and is very involved in the Oregon National Women in Roofing council and she was one of the four women who got together to start that council, and they've done tremendous community service projects. So congratulations to Devri.

Lauren White: And also there is a surprise marching band that for the theme was hitting it out of the park. So for our seventh inning stretch, they had snacks and a photobooth and asked everybody to write what their walk up song would be to make a playlist for everybody to enjoy after NWIR Day and then all of a sudden there is a marching band playing music and getting everybody jazzed up for the rest of the evening and even welcoming us into the reception which was really fun.

Karen Edwards: Some good swag this year. The swag bags had lots of goodies in there.

Lauren White: Yeah, SRS gave this really cool portable charger with the cords already built into it. You don't even have to bring your own cord. It's all in one little package.

Karen Edwards: There was a candle, there was some work gloves had with the new NWIR logo. We heard all about the new logo. With the I being black because they wanted to emphasize the I standing for so many things. One being inclusion, one being insight one being inspiring.

Lauren White: And it now has a roof over the top of it too.

Karen Edwards: And that it's a safe space for every for everyone in this organization.

Lauren White: Yeah, so that was exciting to hear about and we met the new executive director, Katie Bodiford, got to meet her in in person and hear about her goals for NWIR coming up. And then we finished with the reception where you just got to hang out and mingle with everyone and
have some snacks and some drinks. And that was a wrap. It was it was a full day, but it was a good day.

And here's what some of the rest of our crew said about NWIR Day:

Yvette Cruz

I went to the tough talks session and I think that had some very good points to take away not just for like everyday life but especially during the workplace like when you need to ask or have a conversation with a senior or a boss or even just trying to a colleague without jumping to conclusions and avoid work drama. It's very much like you know, you want to state the facts and then how you feel and how you might have interpreted something and then you want to ask them for their side of the story and get their facts before you know jumping to conclusions.

Yeah. For me, I was like for my personal life. Like, I already like we, we communicate my personal life, so I need it for my personal life. It was more so for me standing up because like, there's some times where I've, like wanted to talk to people and I'm like, I don't know how not to sound like a little bitch. I don't know if that makes any sense.

Megan Ellsworth

National Women in Roofing Day 2024 was so great. I think it's so important for women to have a safe space in the roofing industry to just be themselves and share their challenges and their triumphs with one another. And that's exactly what National Women in Roofing Day was this year and there were some really great dynamic classes. I really enjoyed the certification class, as well as the intergenerational diversity class. And I think that the marching band was actually my favorite part. It was so fun. It was so cute to see the high schoolers doing their little dances. And I liked that they had root beer floats. That was fun.

What is cyber coverage?

When it comes to cyber security, keep the experts in your corner by investing in a cyber liability insurance policy and rest assured your company will be covered in the event of a threat.

In an increasingly digital world, cyber security is more important than ever. Invisible threats are constantly lurking in the background, ready to strike the moment your business lets its guard down. Hopefully you have cyber liability for your company already, but how well do you understand your coverage or how to handle a breach without compromising data? Recently, RCS influencer Seth Pietsch, president of Integrity Insurance and Bonding Inc., brought a presentation to the Oregon Council of National Women in Roofing (NWiR) to discuss cyber coverage for the roofing industry. He helps explain cyber liability and how to keep your business safe in the event of a security breach.

According to Seth, cyber liability policies are often underutilized, or companies don’t have coverage at all. However, they are incredibly important, particularly if there is a security event. Seth explains, “[Without cyber liability], if you did have a cybersecurity breach and customers’ or employee information was compromised, there’s a whole process which is regulated by authorities that you have to send out notifications to the people that might’ve had their data compromised. There’s a whole process that needs to be followed.”

Your company is required to follow the appropriate protocol, but it can be really hard to find the steps that need to be taken and in what order. He continues, “With having a cyber liability policy, what it does is it breaks out the steps, in sync of what needs to be done to notify whoever had their data compromised.” Having a policy allows you access to a company that specializes in the notification process and works with you to safeguard your company’s actions after the breach has occurred.

Cyber liability policies are ever evolving because cyber criminals are constantly coming up with new and more sophisticated ways to hack into your system. Particularly within the roofing industry, Seth talks about some of the common cyber threats a policy might cover. “We’ve talked about if an employee or customers’ information gets compromised. You get coverage for your websites. Ransomware, phishing, which is not your typical fishing for fish in a river, it’s phishing for faulty fraudulent wire transfers, stuff like that, or hacking into your server.”

Seth’s key takeaway is this: “Don’t consider your IT company your sole defending force against a cyber-attack.” It’s worth the investment for added protection to ensure your business can appropriately address a cyber threat (and hopefully will never need to!).

Bliss Roofing and National Women in Roofing teamed up to fix the roof of the Project Homeless Connect building in Washington.

For National Roofing Week, Bliss Roofing and National Women in Roofing (NWiR) worked together on a reroofing project for the Project Homeless Connect building in Washington state. The two partnered with the Home Building Foundation to complete the project by supplying labor and materials, much of which was also donated.

Stephanie Baird, general manager of Bliss Roofing, played a large role in helping the project come to fruition. For the past year, she had been planning this major roof tear-off and reroof project and reaching out for donations and organizing the build day. Stephanie was also the recipient of the 2023 WORLD Award Veteran at NWiR day.

The build took place during the National Roofing Contractors Association’s (NRCA) National Roofing Week on their day celebrating charitable projects. The project involved a two-layer roof tear-off, rafter and overhang replacement and a full roof resheet. 12 roofers showed up to help install the roof and many other volunteers attended to help with ground clean up.

In a message sent to her NWiR council, Stephanie said, “What an amazing way to spend National Roofing Week by partnering with the Home Building Foundation to gift a new roof to Project Homeless Connect of Washington County!”

The gifted roof was ultimately valued at $35,000 and the following companies also helped by donating materials and labor:

Owens Corning

Malarkey Roofing Products

Cool Roofs Rating Council (CRRC)

Brenda Ketah, executive director of the Home Building Foundation had nothing but good things to say about the project. “Home Building Foundation-HomeAid Portland is thrilled to work with National Women in Roofing on another shelter project,” she said. “The volunteers are fantastic to work with and every detail is planned and organized. We are very appreciative of this partnership and can’t wait for the next one!”
