At the recent SRS Distribution x InstaLILY AI Innovation Summit, a panel of esteemed CTOs shared their insights on the transformative potential of AI in the supply chain. The panel included Rajeev Rai, formerly of SRS and now CTO at Groundworks; Charles D’Souza, CIO at H-D Supply who spent 18 years with The Home Depot; and Brett Hecker, CIO at TRICORBRAUN, a packaging company based in St. Louis.
The panelists unanimously agreed that AI is at an inflection point, comparable to the advent of electricity in its potential to change how we operate at work and home. Rajeev emphasized that AI's impact is still largely unknown but is poised to be as significant as past technological revolutions.
Rajeev highlighted some low-hanging fruit in AI applications, such as voice agents that can replace the need for 200 people answering queries. He also mentioned the use of AI in field inspections, where certified inspectors take photos and AI analyzes those to identify problems and provide solutions, allowing the inspectors to handle more appointments per day.
Brett discussed the challenges of using automation to generate leads which often end up in the "junk drawer." He emphasized the opportunity for AI to vet, nurture and warm these leads to make them more viable. Brett also pointed out the underestimated complexity of prompt engineering and the importance of rolling out AI solutions in a way that encourages adoption.
Cory Gundberg, SRS CTO, stressed the importance of investing as little as possible to learn as much as possible and the need to "fail fast" to achieve meaningful AI integration. Looking ahead, the panelists agreed on the necessity of faster releases, saying that we won’t see big reveals like we used to and finding success with AI through proper training. They also talked about the potential of outsourcing administrative tasks to AI, freeing up valuable time for more strategic activities.
The panel provided a comprehensive overview of the current state and future potential of AI in the supply chain. Their insights underscored the importance of strategic investment, practical applications and the need for continuous learning and adaptation. As AI continues to evolve, its role in transforming the supply chain will only become more significant.
