John recently sat down with Karen Edwards in this episode of Roofing Road Trips® to talk about the importance of accurate estimating in the roofing industry and how his upcoming class can help professionals with that process. 

Roofing contractors must be able to make accurate estimates efficiently to stay competitive and win bids. But the process of making an estimate is often tedious and challenging. John explained, “I think the first section of challenges that many face is not understanding proper estimating sequencing. What I mean by that is making sure you're covering all your basics, the materials, the equipment, the subcontractors, the others, et cetera and what goes into that.” This issue is something that John has designed all of his estimating courses to address. He explained, “I teach them to make the sequencing part of estimating a habit. Because then you don't have to put a lot of thought process into doing it. It becomes what you're doing each and every way that you're doing it.” 

The second big issue John sees professionals come across is the actual details of the estimating process, so gathering all the numbers. He explained how his estimating classes can help professionals in this part as well, saying, “I teach participants how to estimate off of a historical database that I've put together for this class to get them used to that and understand how to develop that in their own company when they go back. Because without that, you're never going to estimate correctly.”
