The first day of NWIR Days 2026: Connection, leadership and DEI in roofing

The first day of NWIR days 2026: Connection, leadership and DEI in roofing

By Heidi J. Ellsworth.

NWIR Days 2026 was a powerful reminder of how far the association has come and how much opportunity lies ahead when women in roofing continue to lead together.

The first day of National Women In Roofing (NWIR) Days 2026 opened with energy, purpose and a deep sense of connection. As someone who is proud to still sit on the board of directors for NWIR, one of the founders and the first NWIR chair, being a part of this experience is both personal and professional. Seeing how far NWIR has grown over the last ten years is truly inspiring.

NWIR’s core mission has always been about empowering women, creating connections and advancing the industry. In 2025 the board focused on strengthening systems, processes and communications under the leadership of Chair Christee Roberson. That groundwork set the stage for an even stronger year in 2026, where the focus is on connections under the leadership of Chair Christine Mockenhaupt.

The event began with a half-day board of directors meeting that highlighted progress and strategic goals for the year ahead. It was clear early on that building relationships and fostering collaboration remain central to what makes NWIR impactful across the roofing industry.

Following the board meeting was a DEI luncheon that created space for thoughtful and meaningful conversation. Women from across the industry came together to discuss why diversity, equity and inclusion matter now more than ever, and the importance of continued education around what DEI truly means. The conversation also addressed the current state of immigration and the responsibility the roofing industry has to stand for all people who contribute to its success. Roofing depends on a strong diverse workforce, and ensuring dignity, opportunity and respect for everyone remains essential.

Leading the DEI efforts are Mandy McIntyre, DEI committee chair, and Megan Ellsworth, vice chair, alongside committee leader Lilli Tillman and a dedicated team of volunteers. Their leadership created a welcoming environment where honest dialogue could take place and where women felt heard and supported.

At the same time as the DEI luncheon, the Latina Council met under the leadership of Lorna Rojas. The group dove deeply into the challenges facing Spanish-speaking communities, with conversations centered on equity, access and overall rights in today’s climate. These discussions reinforced the importance of advocacy, representation and support within the roofing industry.

The afternoon continued with the NWIR Council Leadership Meeting where council leaders from across the country gathered to learn systems and processes, but even more importantly to learn from each other. The sharing of ideas around growing membership, empowering women and attracting new talent demonstrated the strength of NWIR’s nationwide network. The day concluded with Starry Starry Night, a networking dinner designed to bring women together to connect, engage and begin building lifelong relationships. The sense of community and support in the room reflected exactly what NWIR stands for.

As National Women In Roofing celebrates its 10 year anniversary in 2026, the association remains committed to recruiting, retaining and advancing women in the roofing industry through education, mentoring, networking and leadership development.

Looking ahead, the second day of NWIR Days will continue the celebration with a special focus on the founding members of NWIR, recognition through the annual NWIR Awards and a full schedule of educational classes designed to support women at every stage of their careers. Day two will also be live streamed by RoofersCoffeeShop® on the RoofersCoffeeShop YouTube channel, allowing women and allies across the industry to be part of this milestone event.

The first day of NWIR Days 2026 was more than a series of meetings. It was a powerful reminder of how far the association has come and how much opportunity lies ahead when women in roofing continue to lead together.
