Experienced crews are the key to hybrid roofing success

CCS Influencer Lisa Irby says hybrid roofing systems can cause difficulties when not cured correctly. 

When it comes to hybrid roofs, we prefer to not use them to make sure the membrane is adhered properly. But sometimes you must use self-adhering systems with repairing the roof prior to coating. Many of the coatings can’t be installed over asphalt bleed out unless it has time to cure out. If that ‘s the case it could take months to cure depending on the weather conditions. It’s most important you make sure the self-adhering membranes are adhered properly prior to installing any coatings.

If I were to use a reinforced system, it would definitely be over a self-adhered system. Reinforced systems can be more difficult to install. You must have an experienced crew. We see reinforced acrylic systems on flat roofs that commonly fail due to acrylic being a water-based system and can’t withstand ponding water. If you have a roof that is at the very end of its lifespan then a reinforced system may be best. A good hybrid system that we install is an acrylic reinforced with a topcoat of silicone. If properly done that system is a great system.
