Whether you are looking to expand your offerings or keep your team sharp, training is the key in the roofing industry. In this episode of CoatingsCast®, Karen Edwards sits down with Bob and Miles Yglesias, a father-son duo from Pli-Dek, to talk about training, specifically in terms of the waterproofing sector. Both Bob and Miles are technical representatives for Pli-Dek. In their roles, they work closely with the general contractors and applicators in the field, meaning they are the perfect duo to talk about the importance of training in the waterproofing industry.
Training is a huge emphasis for Pli-Dek as a company, as Miles explained, “Pli-Dek is somewhat of a niche scope of work, we focus on systems for plaza decks, balconies, garages, etc., and to be able to apply the waterproofing correctly takes not only training, but also building a relationship with your manufacturer that can help you when different scenarios crop up with the real world.” Bob added some context of what Pli-Dek's training in the field looks like, saying, “After our trainings when these contractors get jobs, we promise them that we're going to be on site. So training doesn't stop after our in-house training. We are committed to be on site at all times to help in the field.”
A lot of the training that Bob and Miles do is for existing roofing contractors who are looking to diversify their offerings to include waterproofing. Miles explained, “Waterproofing versus roofing, they are two different scopes of work. There are some similarities that we see with our trainings, with our contractors, where the roofing industry comes into play, where there's already a base experience when it comes to metal flashings, understanding fluid applied waterproofing applications. But they are different scopes and training is key to making the jump to offering waterproofing.”
