In a new Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth hosted Duane Musser and Brad Stine from the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) to talk about this year’s Roofing Day in D.C. This annual event brings professionals from all 50 states together on Capitol Hill to advocate for the roofing industry. As Duane put it, “Roofing Day is the industry's largest advocacy event of the year. It was started back in 2018 with Reid Ribble, NRCA’s CEO and a retired congressman as a way for the industry to bring legislators’ attention to various issues.”
This year, Roofing Day will be hosted April 14 –15, 2026, and focus on two main issues – workforce challenges and affordable housing. Duane dove into the details of the workforce issue, sharing:
There are three main subcomponents we’re highlighting this year. First is advocating for more funding for career and technical education... Second, reform if the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which is the federal law that governs, various workforce training and career services for people to get more people into our industry. And thirdly, immigration reform and paths for people to work legally in our industry.
As for the housing issue, NRCA’s 2026 efforts focus on finding ways to develop affordable and accessible housing. Brad gave an example, sharing, “One thing we’re looking at is some legislation around tax credits on the commercial side that talks about developing commercial buildings into residential, livable spaces.”
Overall, Roofing Day offers our industry a powerful way to share our stories and drive positive changes. As Brad put it, “I used to be a staffer on Capitol Hill. And I saw firsthand how important and impactful it is to actually have people come to D.C. and share real stories about the industry and the impacts that government regulations or laws have on them... That kind of collective action really leaves an impression and can drive actual change.”
