Membrane options for every building use

MuleHide’s Fleece Back membranes offer a cleaner, faster and more cost-effective roof recover system.

In an era of rising construction costs and tighter project timelines, many contractors are looking for roofing solutions that offer durability without disruption. Enter Fleece Back membranes, an option gaining traction in the commercial roofing world for its efficiency, performance and practical benefits, especially when used as a recover system. Fleece Back membranes are standard single-ply membranes, TPO, PVC or PVC KEE, enhanced with a fleece layer. This addition opens the door to faster installation, better aesthetics and lower material and labor costs in many recover scenarios. According to MuleHide, recovering an existing roof with a Fleece Back system is often faster, cleaner and more occupant-friendly than a full tear-off.

Why Fleece Back?

Unlike smooth-back membranes, Fleece Back systems can be directly attached to approved substrates, eliminating the need for cover boards in many situations. That’s a game-changer for reroofing over aged EPDM, TPO or Hypalon, especially when the substrate is concrete or gypsum, surfaces notoriously difficult and expensive to fasten into.

Labor and materials savings are only part of the appeal. The fleece backing also helps prevent asphalt bleed-through when installed over an asphaltic-based system, keeping white membranes looking sharp and reflective. And performance-wise, the added layer improves puncture resistance by up to 50%, making it a strong candidate for hail-prone regions.

Choosing the right setup

Not all roofs are candidates for this membrane. Recovering over existing PVC, gravel-surfaced BUR or mechanically attached systems isn’t recommended. A thorough assessment, visual inspection, moisture survey and structural evaluation are essential.

For buildings like hospitals, schools or senior care facilities, full adhesion using a low-odor, VOC-free adhesive such as MuleHide’s Helix® Max can reduce noise and disruption significantly. As stated by MuleHide, Helix Max is the best choice when minimizing the impact on building occupants and activities are essential.

Membrane options for every building use

TPO Fleece Back membranes are durable and weather resistant. PVC is the go-to for chemical-heavy or grease-producing environments like food processing plants or airports. And PVC KEE offers even more chemical resistance.

Warranties range from material only to no-dollar-limit system coverage, but projects must meet installation requirements and be installed by eligible contractors. With the right system and support, Fleece Back recover solutions offer a high-performance, low-disruption path to extending roof life and maximizing value.
