From the primer to the topcoat, UNIFLEX and Sherwin-Williams cover your coating needs.

While the finished product of a roof coating system may look like the roof was given a white paint coat, anyone who’s worked in the coating sector knows that there’s a lot more thought, and types of products, that go into making that pristine, sealed roof. In this episode of CoatingsCast®, Megan Ellsworth sat down with Chris Underwood and James Atkin of UNIFLEX, a member of the Sherwin-Williams brand family, to get some valuable insights into what happens beneath the surface of coating systems.

The first thing to understand about coatings is that the work starts even before you put down the first layer of primer. From cleaning the roof to assessing the substrate there are many considerations when starting a coating project. Chris shared a bit about determining what primer, if any, is needed, sharing, “Primers are generally a good idea. There are some substrates like aged single ply or mod bit that work with what we call single-coat silicone coatings. So those might be an exception, though we do often still encourage a primer, especially if the substrate after inspection does not look like it will have strong adhesion to the coating.”

Beyond looking at the surface you are working on, the other big factor to consider when choosing primers is the coating that is going on top. This is where UNIFLEX’s primers and coating systems truly shine. James explained, “All of UNIFLEX’s primer products are formulated specifically to work with the coatings of our parent company, Sherwin-Williams. We are experts in primer technology and our formulations provide the maximum performance and adhesion that can be applied.” This means that contractors can confidently walk into a Sherwin-Williams store or speak to their regional sales representative and know that they are going to get the perfect combination of UNIFLEX primer with Sherwin-Williams coatings. And while they are there, they can also stock up on a variety of tools, like brushes and pumps, that they need for applying their newly purchased coatings products.
