Whether you specialize in residential or commercial projects, waterproofing is key to upselling projects and building trust with your property owners. In a recent CoatingsCoffeeShop® Lunch & Learn, Jan Bagnall from Pli-Dek shares how understanding and communicating the value of a waterproofing system can lead to bigger scopes of work and long-term customer trust.
While there are many waterproofing systems available on the market, Pli-Dek's system is a lathing based, multi-layer solution with proven durability and flexibility. It includes a hot-dip galvanized steel mesh, a high-strength polymer cement base coat and a flexible finish. “You can put scaffolding on it and do all your stock coat and everything else. You’re not going to hurt it,” Jan explains. “And you should be waterproof through construction with just the base coat.”
The system is also designed to handle harsh environments, from freeze-thaw cycles in Colorado to high-humidity coastal climates and has been tested under 28 different ASTM standards for performance and longevity.
This waterproofing system works great on balconies, walkways, roof decks and any other exposed, walkable surface. According to Jan, roofers are the ideal target market for using this system. He shares, “Roofers are already on the job, they have the roofs ready, but there's also walkways or decks on the job. Contractors or developers want the same applicator, a lot of the time, to do both things that are waterproofing on the roof and on the decks.”
There’s a financial incentive too. While roofing bids often come down to price, deck waterproofing allows you to differentiate your company with better products, aesthetics and performance, meaning your work becomes more profitable. “With the decking systems, you’re not going apples to apples anymore – you're going apples to oranges,” Jan explains. “You’re selling the value of the system you’re putting down, and the builder sees the long-term benefits.”
