Measuring success one project at a time

Measuring success one project at a time
January 27, 2026 at 6:30 a.m.

CCS Influencer Joe Sorrentino says the path to success is paved with meticulous attention to detail, adherence to best practices and informed decision-making

Success in the contracting business is measured one project at a time. Each project should be completed as the next reference for a potential client. Staying focused on a K.I.S Method (Keep It Simple) and process for the inspection, installation and coordination with each client.

Coating contractors can avoid common pitfalls and keep projects profitable by following these six (6) key steps:

  1. Proper surface preparation: Ensure surfaces are clean, dry and free from contaminants before applying any coating. Use appropriate cleaning methods and follow the manufacturer's specifications for surface preparation.
  2. Correct coating selection: Choose the right coating system for specific environmental conditions or substrates to avoid premature failure.
  3. Effective communication: Maintain open lines of communication with clients, suppliers and team members to keep everyone informed and on track.
  4. Environmental control: Monitor and control temperature, humidity and wind to prevent defects in the coating application process.
  5. Overlooking curing and drying times: Curing and drying times are critical aspects of the coating process that should never be overlooked. Each coating material has specific requirements for drying and curing, which are essential for achieving optimal adhesion and durability. Rushing this phase can lead to incomplete curing, resulting in weak, easily damaged coatings. Conversely, extending the curing time beyond the recommended period can also cause issues, such as increased susceptibility to contamination. Temperature and humidity levels significantly influence curing and drying times. Higher temperatures generally accelerate the process, while lower temperatures can prolong it. Similarly, high humidity can slow down drying times, leading to issues such as tackiness or poor adhesion. Monitoring and controlling these environmental factors ensure that the coating cures correctly. It’s critical to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for curing and drying times to avoid these pitfalls.
  6. Routine checks: Implement routine checks during the application process proper coverage rates. Implement a preventative maintenance plan for periodic observations after the completion of work.

The path to success is paved with meticulous attention to detail, adherence to best practices and informed decision-making and a consistent quality control process in the field as well as the office. Avoiding the common mistakes outlined above is crucial for achieving high-quality, durable coatings that stand the test of time. Proper surface preparation, selecting the right coating material, understanding environmental conditions and following manufacturer guidelines are fundamental steps in this process.

Regular maintenance and the role of professional consultation further contribute to the longevity and performance of industrial coatings. By conducting routine inspections and engaging with experts, you can address issues early and implement tailored solutions that enhance the effectiveness of your coatings. This proactive approach not only preserves the appearance and integrity of the coatings but also reduces the need for costly repairs and reapplications.

By adhering to these practices, coating contractors can enhance the quality of their work, provide sound solutions to their clients and enhance the coatings industry.
